Infobit: Since 1985, law schools have been graduating classes of new lawyers that are 40% or more female. Yet in 1996, only 14.2% of law firm partners were women, and in 2005, only 17.2% were women. (Note: this figure is for all partners; the number of equity partners is lower.) Source: Catalyst. At this rate of increase, women should make up half of law firm partners by the year 2115.

PAR Project Website Debuts

Site Provides Information, Asks for Comments

Washington, D.C., June 21, 2000 -- The Project for Attorney Retention (PAR) unveiled its website today.  The site, located at www.PARDC.org, contains news about the Project, its goals and activities.  It also provides articles and links about alternative work arrangements and work-life balance.  In addition to its informational purposes, the site asks attorneys and law firm managers in the District of Columbia to comment on the issues discussed on the site and to participate in a survey.

PAR is an initiative of the Gender, Work and Family Project of American University Washington College of Law, and is funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and supported by the Women's Bar Association of the District of Columbia.  The Project seeks to improve recruiting and retention of attorneys at District of Columbia law firms through the use of work schedules that allow attorneys to better balance the competing demands of their work and their lives outside the office.  The Project aims to develop recommendations for reduced-hours schedules that are professionally rewarding and are not punitive "mommy tracks."
