Comments on the firm's part-time policy:
Cravath has a very low part-time usage rate: only 2.4% of its
attorneys work part-time. Part-time schedules are arranged on
a case by case basis and are generally not available to new hires.
Part-time attorneys must work at least 60%. The firm does not
have a minimum billable hour requirement.
A word of caution:
Cravath provides all part-time associates with a home computer,
a printer/fax machine, and a second phone line. This indicates
that the firm may not respect part-time schedules and may expect
part-time attorneys to work from home during the hours they are
contracted to be off.
Part-time
associates are paid on an hourly basis.
Part-time associates are eligible for bonuses, which are pro-rated.
Part-time
associates are eligible for partnership but need to return to
full-time status for at least one year before being considered
for partnership. PAR does not consider this requirement to be
a best practice. No part-time associates have been made partner.
Cravath
still adheres to an up or out system in which associates who are
not made partner after seven years will not have another chance
at partnership.
Despite the not-so-rosy part-time picture, Cravath was rated
#10 in the top 10 firms for family friendliness by the Yale
Law Women.
