We have received
comments about how well some firms' part-time programs are working.
These comments are often anonymous and cannot be verified; therefore,
they should be viewed as unreliable and given no more weight than
gossip.

Comments on the firm's part-time policy:
Sidley's
part-time program is often praised, and it is generally known
as a good firm for women. The firm has a relatively high
usage rate for its part-time program, approximately 6.3%.
The
firm was one of the earliest to recognize the business benefits
inherent in having a good reduced hours program, and it has also
recognized (at least as the official line) that reduced hours
work should not be limited to just mothers of young children.
The firm has a Committee on the Retention and Promotion of Women,
and has 100 women partners.
We
have heard of part-time associates being made partner.
A
word of caution, however. The firm's website
seems to suggest that the firm is less than supportive of
reduced hours arrangements: "Normally, associates work full-time.
Under certain circumstances, however, we do allow associates to
work part-time, for example, in connection with our maternity
leave policy." (This link is to a summary of benefits at
the DC office, but the other offices have this wording, too.)
Part-time
attorneys who exceed their part-time hours are eligible for bonus
compensation and salary adjustments.

to part-time work, see the firm’s
