We have received
comments about how well some firms' part-time programs are working.

they should be viewed as unreliable and given no more weight than
gossip.

Comments on the firm's part-time policy:
In
2002, we heard reports of part-time attorneys working full-time
hours at Arent, Fox. Also several years ago, Vault.com
reported that the part-time program is a "standing joke"
at the firm and that the firm does not support attorneys' desires
to have a family life, but it also reported that one associate
who was a mother felt respected and did not feel that she had
to sacrifice her family life.
More recently,
positive reviews are prevailing.
Arent, Fox ranked second in the nation for "Best Law Firms
for Diversity" and was rated as a top law firm for women in
2005 by Vault.
Arent, Fox was chosen as one of "50 Best Places to Work in
Greater Washington" by the Washington Business Journal in May
2006.
The
firm was ranked fourth in American Lawyer's Midlevel Associates
Survey in 2004 (up from 28 in 2003). An article titled, "Having
a Life Too," describes the "relatively relaxed attitude"
Arent has toward billable hours (American
Lawyer, Oct 2004).
According
to the firm's website,
"Associates may work on a part-time basis with pre-approval.
The part-time schedule will be based on the needs of the associate
and Arent Fox and must meet certain hours requirements. Part-time
associates receive the same insurance benefits and consideration
for advancement, compensation increases (pro-rated), and bonuses
(pro-rated) as full-time associates."
A
note of caution, however. According to a survey of employees on
Vault.com, the firm is not
a "quality of life" firm. One Washington associate agreed,
saying it is no longer a lifestyle firm.
The
bottom line here is that job seekers need to do their homework
-- different departments may have different cultures for women
and reduced hours work.
